Why Moroccan Thobe Sizing Isn't the Same as a Saudi or Emirati Thobe

A Saudi thobe is built to skim the body — straight, minimal, tailored close through the shoulder and chest. An Emirati thobe is slimmer still, often finished with a tassel and a fitted collar. A Moroccan thobe, or djellaba, is a completely different silhouette, and that changes how you should read a size chart:

The A-line cut. Moroccan thobes flare gradually from chest to hem instead of running straight down. This is deliberate — it’s what gives the garment its movement and its association with comfort and ease. Practically, it means the chest measurement on a Moroccan size chart isn’t the tightest point of the garment the way it can be on a slim Emirati cut.
Room for the sfifa. The ornamental braided trim (sfifa) that runs down the front placket of an authentic Moroccan thobe needs a bit of extra fabric width around the chest and neckline to sit properly without pulling. A too-tight Moroccan thobe distorts this embroidery — you’ll see it pucker.
Built to layer. Many of our customers wear their djellaba over a light undershirt in summer and over another layer in winter, especially the hooded styles. Moroccan thobes are traditionally sized with that in mind, so they naturally run a little looser than a Gulf-style thobe in the same labelled size.
Length runs longer. Because the djellaba is meant to sit at the ankle rather than mid-shin, our Moroccan length measurements are generally longer than you’d expect from a Saudi thobe chart at the same size label — this is one of the biggest reasons customers order a size chart based on a different style and end up with something too short.

How to Measure Yourself for a Moroccan Thobe

Grab a soft measuring tape and, ideally, get someone to help — self-measuring the shoulder is where most mistakes happen.

Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, keeping the tape level and not pulled tight.
Shoulder: Measure from one shoulder seam to the other, across the back.
Sleeve length: From the shoulder seam to your wrist bone, with your arm relaxed at your side.
Full length: From the base of the neck (where a collar would sit) straight down to your ankle bone. Because of that longer Moroccan hem, this is the measurement worth double-checking.

If your numbers land between two sizes on the chart, always size up on chest before length — you can layer underneath a slightly roomier chest, but a length that stops short can’t be fixed.
