Short answer
A thobe too tight across the chest is almost always a reading error, not a manufacturing one. Most thobe size charts list chest as a flat, front-only measurement, roughly half your actual chest circumference. If a chart says “3XL — chest 30” and your chest measures 48 inches, that garment is 60 inches around, which is correct. Read 30 as 30 and you either size up wildly or panic and size down. The other common cause is ordering by length instead of width: the number in a thobe size is the length, the letter is the width. Both are fixable on the next order once you know which one happened.
A thobe is meant to skim the body, not fit it. There are no darts, no stretch and almost no shaping through the torso, so everything depends on the flat width of the panel. There is nowhere for tightness to hide.
On a shirt, a tight chest shows as gaping between buttons. On a thobe it shows as diagonal drag lines running from the armpit down toward the stomach, and you feel it every time you raise your arms for takbir or go into sujood. It is also the fit problem that is hardest to fix afterwards, which is exactly why it is worth understanding what caused it.
Diagnose it in 60 seconds
You arrived here with a symptom rather than a cause, so start here. Match what you actually notice to the section that explains it.
| What you notice | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Diagonal drag lines from the armpit toward the stomach | Chest width — causes 1 and 2 |
| Fine standing still, grips the moment you raise your arms | Armhole depth — cause 5 |
| Tight across the upper chest but loose lower down | Shoulder width — cause 4 |
| Long enough, sometimes too long, but narrow | Ordered by length not width — cause 3 |
| Hem sits noticeably higher at the front than the back | Waist larger than chest — cause 6 |
| Fits nothing like your other garments in the same size | Shirt sizing or overseas grading — cause 7 |
Cause 1: You read a flat measurement as a circumference
This is the single biggest cause, and it catches experienced buyers too.
Thobe manufacturers commonly measure chest armpit to armpit, across the front of the laid-flat garment. That number is half the total circumference. A chart reading S 20, M 22, L 24, XL 26, 2XL 28, 3XL 30 is a flat chart. A chart reading 40, 44, 48, 52 is a circumference chart.
The five-second test. If the chest numbers fall roughly in the 20 to 36 range — about half a normal human chest — it is a flat chart. Double it before comparing it to yourself. When a retailer does not say which it is, ask. It is a fair question and any decent seller answers it in one line.
Cause 2: You didn’t add enough ease
Even after reading the chart correctly, you cannot order a garment that matches your chest measurement exactly. That is a zero-ease fit and it will feel like a wetsuit.
A thobe needs ease, meaning spare room between your body and the fabric. For a relaxed traditional fit on a larger build, that is roughly 8 to 12 inches over your actual chest circumference.
| Your chest (measured around) | Flat chest you need on the chart |
|---|---|
| 44″ | 26″ – 28″ |
| 48″ | 28″ – 30″ |
| 52″ | 30″ – 32″ |
| 56″ | 32″ – 34″ |
| 60″ | 34″ – 36″ |
Always cross-check against the specific retailer’s chart, because grading varies between brands. If you ordered at the bottom of that range or below it, that is your answer. There is no defect in the garment — it was simply cut closer to your body than a thobe should sit.
Cause 3: You ordered by length, not width
Thobe sizes carry two pieces of information and most listings only shout about one.
The number is the length — 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62 — measured in inches from the shoulder seam to the hem. The letter is the width — L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and up.
A size 60 thobe is not a big thobe. It is a long thobe. If you are 6’1″ with a 50-inch chest and you ordered a 58 without specifying a width, you very likely received a 58 in a standard width, which is why it is long enough and still tight. Our guides on what size 60 means in thobes and how to know your thobe size break the two-part system down properly.
Cause 4: The tightness is coming from your shoulders
This one surprises people. You feel it across the chest, but the problem is six inches higher.
If the shoulder seam sits inside your natural shoulder point, on top of the deltoid rather than at the edge of it, the entire upper body of the garment is being pulled inward and upward. That tension travels down and reads as chest tightness. Widening the chest would not fix it, because the shoulder is too narrow.
The 60-second test. Put the thobe on and find the seam where the sleeve joins the body. Press a finger onto it. It should sit at the bony edge of your shoulder. If it sits short of that, on the muscle, the pattern was cut for narrower shoulders than yours.
This is common on garments that have been scaled up rather than properly re-graded. Scaling adds width everywhere at the same ratio, but larger builds do not gain shoulder width and chest depth at the same rate a proportional scale assumes.
Cause 5: The armhole is too shallow
Related but distinct. If you can stand still comfortably and the chest grips the moment you lift your arms, the armhole depth is the culprit, not the chest width.
The test: stand normally, then raise both arms as if going into takbir. Does the whole garment lift and tighten across your upper chest and back? That is a shallow armhole. A correctly cut thobe barely moves when you raise your arms.
Deeper armholes and a slightly dropped shoulder are standard on properly graded extended-size patterns. They are the difference between a thobe you can pray comfortably in and one you are aware of all day, which is also why whether a thobe feels comfortable usually comes down to the pattern rather than the fabric.

Cause 6: Your chest isn’t your largest measurement
If your waist or stomach measures more than your chest, ordering by chest will always produce a garment that is tight lower down and pulls upward, which you will feel across the chest because that is where the fabric is being dragged from.
Order to the larger of the two. Extra room across the chest is invisible on a thobe. A tight midsection is not, and it also causes the hem to sit noticeably higher at the front than the back. Our measurement guide covers how to take both properly.
Cause 7: You used your shirt size
Shirt sizing and thobe sizing are graded differently, by different manufacturers, for different fits. A 3XL shirt and a 3XL thobe are not the same garment width, and the gap widens the further up the size range you go.
Overseas grading compounds this. A thobe graded to non-UK proportions can run one to two sizes small against what a British buyer expects from the same label, which is why the same nominal size from two sellers can fit completely differently. Measure once, properly, and use the numbers rather than the label.
Can a tight thobe be fixed?
Mostly no, and it is better to know that now than after paying a tailor.
| Alteration | Realistic? |
|---|---|
| Shortening the length | Yes, easily |
| Shortening the sleeves | Yes, easily |
| Taking it in (making it smaller) | Yes |
| Letting out the chest | Rarely — usually only ½ to 1 inch total |
| Widening the shoulders | No |
| Deepening the armhole | No, without recutting the sleeve |
Thobes are cut with minimal seam allowance because they are not designed to be enlarged. If the chest is more than an inch too tight, the garment cannot be saved. Treat it as information for the next order rather than money to chase.
What to order next time
Take four measurements — chest, waist at its widest, shoulder width, and shoulder-to-ankle length. Then work through these in order.
- Check whether the chart is flat or circumference. Double the number if it is flat.
- Order to your largest measurement, chest or waist, not just your chest.
- Add 8 to 12 inches of ease to that circumference before you pick a size.
- Check the shoulder measurement is listed. If a retailer publishes chest and length but not shoulder width, they have not graded for larger builds — they have scaled.
- If you are between sizes, go up. A thobe that is slightly generous looks intentional. One that is slightly tight looks like a mistake.
Point 4 is the one worth remembering. A published shoulder measurement is the quickest signal that a seller has drafted extended sizes properly rather than enlarging a standard pattern. It costs nothing to check before you order.
If your chest and waist sit far apart, no standard size will sit right in both places at once. That is the situation where plus size thobes built from dedicated extended-size patterns fit better than an upsized standard cut, because the shoulder, armhole and chest are proportioned for the build rather than stretched to reach it. The same applies to 5XL and 6XL, and to hooded cuts in extended sizes.
And if no standard size works for your proportions at all, a custom made thobe sewn to your own measurements removes the guesswork entirely. That is usually the right call once two orders have come back tight — at that point you are paying twice to keep guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my thobe tight across the chest but loose everywhere else?
Almost always a shoulder or armhole problem rather than a chest problem. If the shoulder seam sits inside your natural shoulder point, the garment pulls inward across the upper chest while hanging loose below. Check the seam position before assuming you need a wider size.
Does “chest 30” on a thobe chest size chart mean 30 inches around?
Usually not. Most thobe charts measure chest flat, armpit to armpit across the front, so 30 means a 60-inch circumference. If the chest numbers on a chart fall between 20 and 36, treat them as flat and double them.
How do I know if a thobe chest size chart is flat or circumference?
Compare the numbers to a real human chest. Anything in the 20 to 36 range is a flat, armpit-to-armpit measurement. Numbers in the 40 to 60 range are full circumference. If the chart does not state which, ask the retailer before ordering.
How much room should a thobe have across the chest?
Roughly 8 to 12 inches more than your actual chest circumference for a relaxed fit on a larger build. Less than 6 inches will feel restrictive, particularly during prayer.
What thobe chest measurement should I order for a 48 inch chest?
On a flat chart, look for 28 to 30 inches, which gives a 56 to 60 inch garment circumference and 8 to 12 inches of ease. On a circumference chart, look for 56 to 60 inches directly.
Should I size up in a thobe if I’m between sizes?
Yes. A thobe is designed to drape, so extra width reads as correct rather than oversized. Tightness is far more visible than looseness.
Can I stretch a thobe that fits tight?
No. Thobe fabrics — cotton, polycotton and polyester weaves — have no meaningful stretch and will not relax with wear. Washing may soften the hand feel but will not change the measurements.
Will a tight thobe loosen after washing?
No, and cotton thobes may shrink slightly on a first hot wash, making the problem worse. Wash cool.
My thobe fitted last year and is tight now. What changed?
Either your measurements changed, or the brand re-graded between production batches. Batch inconsistency is common in this category, so re-measure before reordering even from a seller you have used before.
The short version
Chest tightness in a thobe is nearly always a reading error rather than a manufacturing one. Confirm whether the chart is flat or circumference, order to your largest measurement rather than your chest alone, add proper ease, and check the shoulder seam sits at your shoulder edge.
Get those four things right and the chest looks after itself.
