Short answer
Above 4XL, most thobe size charts stop grading properly. They keep adding width to the chest but barely change the armhole, the shoulder seam or the sleeve, so a 6XL is usually a 4XL that has been made wider rather than a garment cut for a larger frame. If you are a bigger groom shopping for a nikkah thobe, you have probably already noticed the problem. The size chart runs S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and then either stops, or carries on with numbers that do not seem to change much. You order the largest size available, it arrives, and it fits in the body but is wrong everywhere else.
That is not bad luck. It is a predictable consequence of how thobes are graded, and it gets worse the further above 4XL you go. This guide explains exactly what changes, why it matters more on a wedding day than on any ordinary day, and what to do about it.

Why does thobe sizing break down above 4XL?
A thobe is sized on two axes at once, which is the root of the confusion. There is a number for length, measured shoulder to ankle in inches, typically 52 to 62. And there is a letter for width, typically S through XXXL, measured flat from armpit to armpit.
So “size 60 XXXL” means a 60-inch length with an XXXL width. If you have ever wondered what size 60 means in thobes, that is it.
The problem is what happens to the rest of the pattern as those two numbers grow. Look at how a typical extended size run actually grades:

That is the whole issue in one table. The chest grows six times faster than the armhole. A garment graded like this is not a larger thobe, it is the same thobe let out at the sides.
Why it happens: most sellers hold stock, and holding stock in eight widths across six lengths is dozens of combinations per design. So they grade the two measurements a customer checks before buying, chest and length, and leave the rest of the pattern where it was.
What actually changes above 4XL?
Five things go wrong, in roughly this order of visibility:
- The shoulder seam slides down your arm. Shoulder width is graded far more slowly than chest. The seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone. When it sits an inch or two down the arm, the whole thobe reads as borrowed, and it is the single thing that shows in every photograph.
- The armhole stays shallow. A larger chest needs a deeper armhole, not just a wider body. When it is too shallow, the fabric binds the moment you lift your arms, which you will do repeatedly across a nikkah.
- The sleeve is too narrow at the bicep. Sleeve length gets graded. Sleeve circumference often does not. The result is a sleeve that fits at the cuff and grips at the arm.
- The hem rides up at the front. This is the one nobody warns you about. Fabric has to travel over the chest and stomach before it can fall, and that journey consumes length. Two men the same height need different lengths if one carries more weight. Order by height alone above 4XL and the front hem sits short while the back hangs correctly.
- The placket strains when you sit down. A nikkah is largely a seated ceremony. A thobe that fits standing can pull across the middle the moment you sit, which is exactly when the photographs are being taken.
None of these are about being a larger size. They are about a pattern that was drafted for a smaller frame and then widened.

Why does this matter more at a nikkah than any other day?
An everyday thobe that binds slightly is an annoyance. A wedding thobe that binds is a problem, because of what the day actually asks of the garment.
- You are seated for most of it. The ceremony, the signing, the meal. A thobe that only fits standing will be pulling across the middle in the majority of your photographs.
- Your arms go up repeatedly. Dua, embracing family, being pulled into photographs. Every one of those movements tests the armhole.
- It is photographed from every angle, all day. A drooping shoulder seam is invisible in a mirror and obvious in a photograph taken from the side.
- It is a long day. Eight or more hours in something that binds is a different experience from an hour at Jummah.
- There is no second chance. Ordinary clothes get worn again. This one has a single date attached to it.
There is also the point that grooms rarely say out loud. It is genuinely hard to find images of larger grooms in traditional dress, which makes it hard to picture what a well-fitting thobe should even look like on your own build. That is part of why “closest size available” gets accepted so often.

How we cut plus size wedding thobes differently
We do not upsize a standard pattern. Above XL we work from dedicated plus-size templates, which means the shoulder, armhole, sleeve and length are each drafted for a larger frame rather than stretched from a smaller one. That is the difference between a thobe that is bigger and a thobe that fits.
We also grade to true UK measurements rather than generic overseas sizing, so a 5XL here means what a British customer expects it to mean. And we hold those measurements consistent across reorders, so a second thobe in the same size arrives the same as the first.

Which fabric works best above 4XL?
Fabric choice matters more on a larger frame, because there is simply more of it. A fabric that feels light in a size L can feel heavy at 6XL, and a fabric that creases will crease across a bigger surface.

What measurements should you send us?
Five numbers, and you can take all of them at home in about three minutes:
- Chest — around the fullest part, tape flat against you.
- Stomach — around the widest point. This is the one most charts ignore and the one that decides whether the placket strains when you sit.
- Shoulder — across the back, from the edge of one shoulder bone to the other.
- Sleeve — from the shoulder edge to your wrist.
- Shoulder to ankle — the length. Take it standing straight, and tell us your weight range too, because length is consumed going over the body.

Family packs when sizes vary across the wedding party
This is where holding stock fails hardest. If your father is a 3XL, you are a 6XL and your brother is a medium, a stock-based seller will run out somewhere in that range and offer you “the closest match” in a slightly different black. In photographs, slightly different reads as wrong.

60 is the length in inches from shoulder to ankle, not the width. Width is given separately as a letter such as XL or XXXL, so a full size looks like “60 XXXL”.
